Reflecting on the 23 things

Well we made it! What interesting 23 things we have learned in the past 9 weeks. We went from learning to blogg (still not my favorite thing) to learning to share photos on Flickr (way cool) to getting caught up with news like RSS and more. Some of my favorite things (no I'm not Julie Andrews) are Wiki's , LibraryThings, and Online Applications. With Wiki's you can share some much information about a certain subject like the Library. LibraryThings is a website where you can share what you are reading and have people offer their choose in books, "It connects you to other people who have the same or similar reading tastes". Online applications it going to save me so much time when working on documents. Knowing that I don't have to email it back and forth, but to just go online and there are my documents. I even signed up for an Online Application service just for that purpose.

When ask if I would do another 23 things, I would have to answer Yes. To me this is the wave of the future and to miss any part would be lefted behind. Beside I like learning what coming around the corner in techinogy.

Thanks for reading
Fred

Audiobooks and the Digital Collection

Exercise #22 was learning about Audiobooks and the Digital Collection. This is good service for people who like to listen to books when exercising, walking or maybe driving. Being able to download to an MP3 player or burn to a CD would benefit people that don't have access to transportion like the homebound. Also in the times that we live in, its great to have a free service where you still can get new books and not have to worry about paying or driving to the library to return them. When searching through the Digital Library I came across old Radio Shows like Jack Benny and Life of Riley that my dad listened to when I was younger and knowing that there ways to make copies for him it a plus. Who knows maybe this will be the only way to get books.

Tool for locating Podcasts

Exercise #21 of the last of 23 things is to locate and listen to Podcasts. I went to the Library of Congress and listen to a couple of interviews with authors that where at the 2007 National Book Festival. One of the author was David Balchacchi talking about his 2007 book "Simple Genius". Podcasts are interesting, but to me they remind me of books on tape. With podcast someone is reading or talking to you and at the point I start to lose interest and not pay attention. I like reading the books or getting the information myself, I guess I'm old fashion. It's good to know that there are other way to get information and I'm sure people enjoy Podcast, but Podcast are not for me.

Podcasts, Videos & Downloads audio

We finally made it to the last week of 23 things! This week's exercise was to look at Podcast, by visiting Youtube. It was my first time visiting the site and was amazed at wait you could see . You can see some questionable video or you can see some wonderful videos. For example I had heard about the Northern Lights but had never seen them. I found a beautifully made video showing the Northern Lights with music composed by Blackmore. It made me want to see the lights in person what an awesome video. So me to that was a plus Youtube, but would I visit or use Youtube again, probably not.

Here a chance to see it for yourself. Enjoy!!

Playing around with the PBCLSWiki

Back in week 7 we were ask to learn about Wikis. PBCLS has a Sandbox Wiki where staff could post the favorites animals, vacation spots and more. It was interesting how Wikis work and also so see what other people favorite things were. Wikis are one of the new ways information is being shared over the Internet.

Discovering Web 2.0 Tools

The second part of this week lesson was Discovering Web 2.0 tool.s I went to the website http://www.seomoz.org/web2.0/short where the a notice the best Web 2.o Awards. The awards are listed by categories and awards are for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In looking around the categories I choose to look at Wetpaint. Wetpaint is a free wiki place where you can created you own wiki the other place was Onmodrive. Onmidrive is used for Digital Storage. With Onmidrive you have access to all files and photos anywhere there is access to the Internet. This saves you from having to save things on your computer

Online Applications and Tools

This week's lesson was learning about Online Applications and Tools. Of all the web 2.0 materials we have looked over in the past 7 weeks, this one would be one I liked so far( we still have 1 more week to go). Learning about Online Applications has open a whole new way for me to work on my documents at home then having to send in an email. Working off-line is also a plus. I like the idea that I have access to my documents where ever I am and I don't have to email them back and forth. Learning about Zoho was a great, I liked that its close to using MS Word and it has most of the important features that Word does. So we will give to a try!

Wikis

Today lesson was learning about Wikis. I went to the wiki called St. Joseph County Public Library's Subject Guides. This is a wiki that connect the library, the community, weather, news and more. They called it a Pathfinder, with type of wiki you don't need to be going to different web address, just click on a link and you're right there. One stop shopping. This wiki or other wiki make it easier to access the informatin right at your finger tips and saves you.

Library 2.0

The last exercise for this week was learning about Library 2.0 and how it will effects libraries. Looking on back to how library first started with just books and now how it has evolved to offer so much more., with Internet access to online searching of books or information, to have tpatrons access the same information from home. One wonders what will the future hold in the information world. Will library have books in the future?
Fred

Technorati

The second lesson for this week was to go to a website called Technorati and learn about how to search for blogs and how to use Tags. When searching for blogs you can use keywords for searching for certain blogs like libraries, travel or sports. When you the keywords Web 2.0, the results came up with different tags for ex technology, Internet, Web 2.0 and techcrunch. What surprised me the most was how many Blogs there are, there are 175, 000 new blogs being created everyday! Wow So I guess there is a blog for everyone and every subject, you just have to do a search or use a Tag!
Fred

Del.icio.us

Del.icio.us

One of this week's exercise was exploring an social bookmarking website. Where you learn to save websites and add tags. This is much better then saving websites on your computer. With your favorites you are limited to just your computer, but on a social bookmarking web site like Del.icio.us you can save and share you websites or add your websites to other peoples lists. So not only are you helping yourself but you are also sharing your information with others and you can access your websites anywhere you have computer access, which to me would be important if you don't have access to your computer. Good Idea!

Webfeat

This week exercise was using the link called Webfeat which can be found on the library's home page. By using this search and putting in my home state , I was able to come up with some interesting facts on New Jersey that I didn't know. I lived in New Jersey for 15 years and now just learned some interesting facts from the world book encyclopedia

The first drive-in motion picture theater was opened on June 6, 1933, on Crescent Boulevard outside Camden. The theater presented two shows each night on a 40 by 50 foot (12 by 15 meter) screen. Inclined rows at the theater accommodated 500 cars. Richard Hollingshead, Jr., the owner of the theater, originated the idea for the drive-in.

A huge clock in a riverfront park in Jersey City can be read from across the Hudson River in New York City. The clock, which came from the old Colgate-Palmolive building, is 50 feet (15 meters) across. The minute hand, about 26 feet (8 meters) long, moves 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) every 34 hours 4 minutes.

The first electric sewing machine was made in 1889 by the Singer Manufacturing Company at its factory in Elizabethport (now Elizabeth).

Library Things

This week's task was to visit a web site called Library Things and create a library of our own. This was fun and interesting because you can connect with other readers who are interested in the same type of books as you. So basically its an online Reader Advisory for the world. One nice thing about this week site you can keep track of what you have read or make a list of books for furture reading. If you love books and read the same type of books then stop by and check it my library here the address:http://www.librarything.com/catalog/flbookreader

Here is my ideal keyboard. A button that will answer the mystery of "Where is the Any Button"

Generators
I found a generator web site that would let you create your own keyboard or maybe you always wanted your name in chocolate. This would be a fun place to go plus it's a fun and simple.
Here the web site: http://www.glassgiant.com/

RSS and Adding Feeds

Hi,

So far we have learned how to create a blog, share photos online and now RSS Feeds. By creating an account you can get RSS Feeds on topics that you are interested in. For example some of my choices were Dogs or Music and Movies. Also by making your account public it gives other people a chance to see what you are interested and they can share comments too. With the way the technology is changing soon papers will be gone and the only way to get any news will be RSS or the Internet. One plus to that is think of all the trees were saving and that we are also helping the planet.

Technology

Technology that I most enjoy working with are computers. With computers the learning never ends. You have many possibilities for learning different programs like web page design or learning new technology that was developed like blogging or Web 2.0. Computers give you a way to reach and learn about different locations and to hear or see what is happening at a moments notice. The days of getting our information after the fact like in a newspaper or TV are now being replace with watching it unfold in the moment or seconds later. Who knows what the future will being. Just like in the 1960's (or early) when people we told there would be phones where you would see the other party and now we have web cam.
One can only wonder the future will being...

Jupiter Lighthouse

This is the 3-dimensional mural that greet patrons when they are headed to either the ReferenceDept or the Children's Dept.

It is much enjoyed by the patrons as well as the staff. When looking out the mural it gives you a feeling of being there or wanted to go there.

The Long Journey

Thoughts about Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Life long Learners.

Of the Seven habits that would be the hardest would be Habit #1" Beginning with the end in mind". Planning what you want to accomplish is easy but sitting down and doing what needs to be done is hard. We all have good intention on what we want to do then things get in the way or we say soon or maybe next month . Hopefully by the end of the 23 Things I will have learned to accomplish more of my goals and have fun while doing it.

The Long Journey

Blogging and Library

Blogging in libraries could add a new dimension to how information is exchange. For example answering reference questions or maybe keeping patrons updated on any new changes at the library. Patrons could log in and check out reviews of library programs or may they could add their own reviews. There could be a blog for people to share technical information or help with computer problems. Patrons could feel like they are part of the library by letting them do Reader Advisory by exchanging thoughts on books that they have read, but only time will tell how.
